Behind the Scenes
Oh how I love this room… I mean, the space itself isn’t particularly unique… cuz, I mean, it’s pretty much your basic square bedroom… BUT, the natural light is picture perfect… and all that sunlight really gave us a launching point. We knew we wanted a space filled with light, color and texture, but we also wanted to give a nod to the original architecture of the house. Soooo many of these old homes had/have beautiful built-ins and natural wood paneling – but through the years have been replaced or taken down… so the first thing we suggested was to add faux paneling – I know what you’re thinking, “Faux paneling Kate? What in the world does that even mean? Kate, you must explain!” – So here’s the thing… installing 3/4-of-the-way wall paneling would have been mega expensive, and since we knew we wanted the paneling to be white anyway, there really was no reason to put up wood paneling — to create the LOOK of paneling, we just (and we’ve done this for several rooms now… cuz it’s a REALLY great look, and super cost effective!) simply installed 2-by-4 wood planks around the room – giving dimension to the wall – and then painted it with the same semi-gloss paint that we used for ALL the trim in the room… and voila! You have the LOOK of paneling, for about 1/4 of the price! To really finish the look we made sure to install white trim along the top so that it had that full 1920s high paneling look! We then wallpapered just above that, which gave the room a beautiful balance of old architecture with fabulous contemporary wallpaper! The other main point of inspo came from a picture my client found in a magazine… in the picture there was a bright yellow dresser… and get this… my client had an old dresser that was pretty tired, but rather than throwing it out, we found a vibrant yellow gold paint and had it completely repainted… instantly bringing this dated piece into the 21st century. The dresser against the white paneling was perfection! From there, we styled the space with pillows, plants, and pictures (3 of the P’s! We already discussed Paint), and a bunch of cool vintage pieces I picked up at antique shops last summer. The client is thrilled!! And so are we!!
